Helmet Solution
Touchstone. This art piece reminds me that every "better" solution is a metaphorical Helmet. Since creating this piece, each time someone offers me a new, better solution for my life, I think to myself, "they are offering you a helmet." To me this means they are offering me and others something that is undeniably true, beautiful, and logically better than what we are already doing. I remind myself, "there's no reason to deny their logic, it is as sound as wearing a helmet." And I don't deny it. But by reminding myself that offered solution is a metaphorical helmet solution I honor the fact that we will not DO it ("wear the helmet") unless we think it is DIRE for us to do so (we really love the particular solution, or we fear that we can't do without it). I have asked many people, "why don't you wear a helmet when you drive?" Their responses reveal the stunning weakness of pure logic and strong arguments in the face of basic human desire. "No, I don't think so, I would mess up my hair." Such response reminds me of the ancient wisdom, "by small and simple things are great things brought to pass; and small [things] in many instances doth confound the wise." People's responses to the Helmet Solution has led me to celebrate and relish and not bemoan the power each of us have to deviate from seemingly inescapable logic and persuasions others---be they gurus, professors of one sort or another or the marketplace---would impose on us. I am pleased that you and I don't have to conjure up sophisticated justifications to trump even the most weighty logic. The fact is though I bring much sound logic and energy to bare I haven't persuaded a single person to wear a car helmet consistently, including myself. Isn't it wonderful!
"People do not obey truth just because it's true. No matter how true and beautiful a particular truth is, people will not cling to it unless they have (or can find) a passion that glues them to the truth." - anonomous
